Author Biographies

Erika Smeenk-Metz

Erika Smeenk-Metz studied art history at the Free University in Amsterdam and trained as a conservator of easel paintings at the Limburg Conservation Institute in Maastricht. She has worked as a conservator for various museums, institutions and private individuals. Works she has restored for the Rijksmuseum include The Militia Company of Captain Dirck Jacobsz Rosecrans and Lieutenant Pauw by Cornelis Ketel (with B. Schoonhoven), Still-life with Asparagus by Adriaen Coorte, Maria van Strijp by Johannes Verspronck and recently Young Woman in a Broad-Brimmed Hat by Caesar Boetius van Everdingen (with Manja Zeldenrust).

Manja Zeldenrust

Manja zeldenrust is the head of the paintings conservation workshop. She started at the Rijksmuseum in 1974 as a voluntary worker. After in-house internships in Germany, Switzerland and Italy she became a conservator in the early 1980s. She is now in charge of a group of ten conservators.

Arie Wallert

Arie Wallert is the curator of technical painting research and senior scientist at the Rijksmuseum.
