Author Biography

  • Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr.

    Arthur Wheelock has been curator of Dutch and Flemish painting at the National Gallery of Art in Washington since 1975. He is a professor of art history at the University of Maryland. He has lectured widely on Dutch and Flemish art and has written numerous authoritative books, articles and essays on this subject. Wheelock has organized major exhibitions at the National Gallery, such as Gods, Saints & Heroes: Dutch Painting in the Age of Rembrandt; Anthony van Dyck; Johannes Vermeer; Jan Steen: Painter and Storyteller; A Collector’s Cabinet; From Botany to Bouquets: Flowers in Northern Art; Gerrit Dou: Master Painter in the Age of Rembrandt; Aelbert Cuyp; Gerard ter Borch; Rembrandt’s Late Religious Portraits; Jan Lievens: Dutch Cityscapes from the Golden Age, and Hendrick Avercamp: The Little Ice Age.
