A Slave Shackle with a Story

Maria Holtrop is junior conservator at the History Department of the Rijksmuseum,
where she is predominantly concerned with colonial history. Currently she is conducting
preliminary research for the exhibition about South-Africa. During her time at the museum
she also developed a multi-media tour about slavery and the Dutch colonial past. It is within this framework that she stumbled upon the history of the slave shackle, traced in her contribution to this volume.
