Author Biographies

  • Anna Krekeler

    Anna Krekeler studied Art Technology and Conservation of Works of Art at the Academy
    of Fine Arts in Dresden, and has been working as a paintings conservator at the Rijksmuseum
    since October 2007. She is currently involved in a research project about Rembrandt’s late
    painting technique as part of the upcoming Late Rembrandt exhibition, a collaboration
    between the National Gallery London and the Rijksmuseum (London/Amsterdam 2014-15)

  • Erika Smeenk-Metz

    Erika Smeenk-Metz studied art history at the Free University in Amsterdam and trained as
    a conservator of easel paintings at the Limburg Conservation Institute (SRAL) in Maastricht. She has worked as a conservator for various museums (Van Gogh Museum, Royal Picture Gallery Mauritshuis, Rijksmuseum), institutions (RCE) and private individuals. She worked in the Rijksmuseum’s conservation studio from the end of 2005 until early 2013. Currently working as a freelance paintings conservator, she is in the process of setting up a private conservation studio.

  • Zeph Benders

    Zeph Benders is a Conservation Specialist/Paintings Conservator in the Collections Department of the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. He studied Arts and Culture at the University of Maastricht. He trained at the Limburg Conservation Institute (SRAL), Maastricht, The Netherlands, and previously worked for the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.

  • Michel van de Laar

    Michel van de Laar has worked as a paintings conservator in the Rijksmuseum since 1989. He was trained in Belgium at Anderlecht and Louvain-la-Neuve, and subsequently completed internships at Statens Museum for Kunst (Copenhagen), The J. Paul Getty Museum (Los Angeles) and the Courtauld Institute of Art (London). He publishes regularly on restoration, restoration history and workshop practices in the Rijksmuseum Bulletin and elsewhere.
